BLIGATORY Picks
Geordie Greep - The New Sound
Jazz-Rock, Progressive Rock, Art Rock
via Rough Trade Records
write-up by Peter Doherty
The first record to be released on the other side of the black midi split comes in the form of Geordie Greep's solo debut, The New Sound. Recorded with over thirty session musicians in São Paolo and London, the jazz-infused progressive fields in which Greep and co. sew their seeds bloom with fervent, crude flowers.
On recording his debut, Greep shared:
"It was the first time I have had no one to answer to. And with every impulse I had, I was able to completely follow it through to its conclusion. Being in a band (black midi), we often have this ‘we can do everything’ feeling, but you are also kind of limited in that approach, and sometimes it's good to do something else, to let go of things."
Once he starts playing he never stops, that damn boy.
The New Sound is out now via Rough Trade.
Cheekface - "Flies"
Power Pop, Indie Rock
Self-Released
write-up by Dominick Baglivo
Earlier this year, DIY sweethearts Cheekface released their fourth album in five years with It’s Sorted (plus some B-Sides with an EP in May). This week, the trio of Greg Katz, Amanda Tannen, and Mark Echo Edwards share more new music with the single “Flies.”
Like many of the best Cheekface tracks, “Flies” has a skip-worthy power-pop foundation with Katz’ sardonic wit and talk-singing expertise on full display.
“We are living the dream in a room full of flies
And we look out of place in a space out of time
There's a buzz in our heads and the insects replied
‘We were doing a bit for our whole frickin' life”
Bonus points to America’s local band for tagging the legend Jeff Rosenstock, who contributes baritone sax on this one.
Florist - "This Was A Gift"
Singer-Songwriter, Indie Folk
via Double Double Whammy
write-up by Atticus Deeny
October 1 was a gloomy, drizzly day in Philadelphia, which provided a fitting backdrop for the release of Florist’s comeback single “This Was A Gift.” Since forming in 2013 somewhere in the Catskill Mountains, Florist has been driven mainly by the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Emily Sprague, with the new single being aided by the recurring cast of Rick Spataro, Jonnie Baker, and Felix Walworth.
“This Was A Gift” finds beauty in soft vocals, a steady drum beat, and a blend of keys and guitars embodying the comforting chord progression. The electric piano bends here and there, and the electric guitar has a touch of distortion and crunch. Sprague’s lyrics are existential, with dreams of peace through music and the repetition of “only the dead survive.” As mentioned earlier, the overall feeling of the track is a bit somber, but more in a tranquil sense than a sad one. It’s the feeling of being “stuck” inside, allowing yourself to sit, stare, and think while the rain comes down outside—ideally in a more natural setting than a Philadelphia apartment.
In a July 2024 Instagram post, Sprague confirmed that the next Florist album is done. “This Was A Gift” seems to be the first glimpse of it, although not directly confirmed by the band yet. Florist is currently wrapping up a brief tour in Japan; keep watch for more Florist updates later this year!
Mount Eerie - "I Saw Another Bird"
Slacker Rock, Singer-Songwriter
via P.W. Elverum & Sun
write-up by Peter Doherty
Mount Eerie starts the month-long countdown to his next full-length with the latest single "I Saw Another Bird.”
About the track, Elverum had this to say:
“Behind the dry smirk of the title (sequelling out 'A Crow Looked At Me') there are huge feelings that get opened. We are ridiculous little people tolling on the ground, but the sublime darts around above us always. We can pause, chill, and resume the conversation with the big unknown. This song tells how, in a toe-tapping way.”
The fuzzed-up curls of "I Saw Another Bird" tickle the ear fringes and hark back to other Elverum projects such as The Microphones' The Glow Pt. 2.
“I know there is another world inside this one, it shines.”
Night Palace is out November 1 on P.W. Elverum & Sun.
Atticus' Picks
HOMESHAKE - "Waiting For The Phone To Ring"
Hypnagogic Pop, Bedroom Pop
via SHHOAMKEE
HOMESHAKE is about to drop a deluxe version of his second album of 2024. Toronto’s Peter Sagar has been extremely active this year under his own record label SHHOAMKEE, which began as an imprint under his former label Synderlin.
“Waiting” is the first single towards the Horsie deluxe and does not sound out of place within the established style of Sagar: dreamy, homemade, intimate, and a bit lonely. The warping drums stand out, randomly contorting during occasional drum fills. Sagar’s voice is also tucked a bit low within the mix of instruments, which takes the emphasis off it in a cool way when the synths cover up his words.
Ever since Under The Weather (2021)—Homeshake’s final album with Synderlin—there has been a noticeable change in output patterns. It infers something of more control or freedom, possibly inspiration as well. Homeshake is currently on tour in the U.S. through late November, with the six-track deluxe of Horsie releasing November 8.
Jonah Yano - Jonah Yano & The Heavy Loop
Bedroom Pop, Jazz Pop
via Innovative Leisure
Dominick's Picks
BLOUS3 - Synchronized Swimming
Post-Hardcore, Noise Rock
via Cherub Dream Records
Crunchy, off-kilter noise rock from the Sacramento’s BLOUS3. Synchronized Swimming is the band’s third album and their first as a four-piece. Out now via Cherub Dream Records.
Cindy - Swan Lake (EP)
Indie Pop, Soft Rock
via Tough Love
A six-track EP of stripped-down, meditiative indie pop from San Francisco’s Cindy. A vague sense of familiarity and comfort is at the core of Swan Lake.
Speaking on her influences, Cindy’s songwriter Karina Gill shared this:
"People have told me that they can’t quite identify my influences. Me neither. The foundational layers of music of the past and my past have been metabolized like breakfast and turned into more me, sorry to say. But I experience the music of people I’m connected with and it impacts me in the moment. There’s the music I’m around – April Magazine, Sad Eyed Beatniks, Violent Change, Katsy Pline, collaborating with Mike on Flowertown – that I can feel a direct line from. Then there’s music that is being made far away but feels close, like Lewsberg, specifically, for this EP. "
Swan Lake is out now via Tough Love.
CLASS - A Healthy Alternative
Garage Punk, Garage Rock
via Feel It Records
A punchy record filled with classic-sounding garage punk from Tucson, Arizona’s CLASS. With scrappy drums and spiky riffs abound, the band’s third album is a jolt of energy. A Healthy Alternative is rough around the edges, but decidedly so; CLASS have more to offer than raw power in the way of layered harmonies and sharp songwriting.
A Healthy Alternative is out now via Feel It Records.
cumgirl8 - the 8th cumming
Synth Punk, Post-Punk
via 4AD
Manhattan four-piece cumgirl8 share their debut album (and first release for 4AD) the 8th cumming. Melding riot grrrl and synth punk together into chrome fireballs, the 8th cumming is a chaotic and pulsating record rooted in cyberfeminism.
Introducing their new project, the band writes:
"Welcome to the digital apocalypse. Reality is deleted!
As the earth-born simulation of consciousness approaches its inevitable post-reality, we cumgirl8, upon our 8th cumming to this planet earth, present our alien kin with a sonic cum-piss to navigate the imaginary boundary between science fiction and social reality. The simulation is the hyperreality.
As your hosts, we have cum to conduct serious play with the virus of humanity; to lead you through the swamp of e-waste, the degenesis of technology, and the overflow of the rebellious AI meme-plex.
We are all cyborgs, released from the originas sacred slime. Guided by the phallic mother and the planet VNS we give you a world without end."
the 8th cumming is out now via 4AD.
Drug Church - PRUDE
Post-Hardcore, Alt. Rock
via Pure Noise Records
Rabid, no-frills post-hardcore with earnest lyricism and storytelling backed by stringent grooves. PRUDE marks the Albany band’s fifth album since they formed in 2011. Out now via Pure Noise Records.
Joyer - I See Forward and Back (EP)
Indie Folk
via Hit The North Records
Earlier this year, the Brooklyn/Boston duo of brothers Nick and Shane Sullivan shared their third studio album, Night Songs. This week, Joyer share a new EP titled I See Forward and Back.
More laid back and stripped-down than their usual sound, Joyer share three new songs, including the previously released “Glluu.” I See Forward and Back is out now via Hit the North Records.
Anno - "disco" (ft. NAPPYNAPPA)
Minimal Synth
Self-Released
The artist formerly known as ‘Olivia Neutron-John’ shares the first single from their upcoming debut album, Anno. Under the ONJ name, the D.C.-based artist released their self-titled EP in 2019 with five tracks of entrancing and intoxicating minimal synth. The sultry, seductive nature of “disco” is just as fascinating and features rapper NAPPYNAPPY of the duo model home.
Anno is out November 1.
Kassie Krut - "Reckless"
Breakbeat, Glitch Pop, Deconstructed Club
via Fire Talk Records
Featuring former members from Philly math-pop legends Palm (2012-2023 thank you for your service), Kassie Krut make their Fire Talk label debut with “Reckless.” What began as a solo project of Kasra Kurt (guitar, vocals in Palm) has now expanded into a trio alongside Eve Alpert—guitar, vocals in Palm—and Matt Anderegg, who helped produce Palm’s final record, Nicks and Grazes (2022).
On their first offering as a trio, Kassie Krut produce a simplistic but frantic exercise in restraint. About the track, the band add: “We challenged ourselves to write a song with one bass note, one drum beat and just a couple simple chords. Sometimes we experience self-doubt so it was fun to create a tougher version of ourselves - someone who’s fast and mean - as well as playing w the misconception that Kassie is an individual and not a band. Also our project name is a little strange so we took the opportunity to spell it out for the listener.”
Machine Girl - "Psychic Attack"
Hardcore Breaks, Digital Hardcore
via Future Classic
Two weeks out from MG Ultra, NYC digital hardcore duo Machine Girl drop the album’s third single with “Psychic Attack.” Alongside previous singles “Until I Die” and “Motherfather,” MG’s latest offering shows off their melodic capabilities—but it’s certainly the most “classic Machine Girl” of the bunch, if you will.
Hardcore breaks to the max, “Psychic Attack” is just that: an attack. Booming, skittish beats ravishing synths, and an earworm of a chorus—it’s Machine Girl at full intensity.
MG Ultra is out in less than two weeks now on October 18 via Future Classic.
Market - "Water Spilling Test"
Singer-Songwriter, Art Pop
via Western Vinyl
“Water Spilling Test” is the third and final single taken from Market’s upcoming sophomore album, Well I Asked You A Question. Led by record engineer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Nate Mendelsohn, the Brooklyn-based band served up two other slices of anxious pop with “Setraline” and “Apple.”
About the track, Mendolsohn shared the following on Instagram:
“hark! ‘Water Spilling Test’ is a song about zooming in so far on a breakup that accidentally drowning all of my belongings in water feels like some sort of twisted victory.”
Well I Asked You a Question is out November 1 via Western Vinyl.
Thank - "Woke Frasier"
Noise Rock, Post-Punk
via Big Scary Monsters
Leeds-based noisemakers Thank share the satirical “Woke Fraiser,” the third single taken from their upcoming album I Have A Physical Body That Can Be Harmed.
“Bad news, your credit card details are now woke / and you should send them to me for safe disposal.”
I Have A Physical Body That Can Be Harmed is out November 8 via Big Scary Monsters.
Clothesline From Hell - "Nice enough words"
Singer-Songwriter, Bedroom Pop, Post-Grunge
via 444%
Earlier this year, Toronto-based musician Adam LaFramboise shared his third project with the Soon We’ll All Be Smoking EP. This week, he returns with a new single that is decidedly more stripped-back than the semi-metallic, grunge-based, and lo-fi sound associated with Clothesline From Hell. There’s still a slight edge to “Nice enough words,” but a combination of heavenly strings, lovely keys, and lack of drums differentiate this one quite a bit.
Corker - "Vital Fall"
Post-Punk
via Feel It Records
Hailing from the rising (and lowkey stacked) punk scene in Cincinatti, Corker play a brand of post-punk sharp enough to cut steel. They released their debut full-length, Falser Truths, last year and have now announced album number two alongside “Vital Fall.”
The dark, swirling nature of the Corker’s music was on full display with “Distant Dawn,” a single they put out back in January. Bound to the shadows, “Vital Fall” is a tad less punchy, but it contains multitudes within some absolutely killer grooves.
Hallways of Grey is out October 18 via Feel It Records.
Man/Woman/Chainsaw - "The Boss"
Noise Rock
via Fat Possum Records
In about a month, London-based group Man/Woman/Chainsaw will share their debut EP, Eazy Peazy. They’ve already shared two singles in “Ode To Clio” and “Grow A Tongue In Time,” returning this week with “The Boss.”
The most assertive of the three singles, here’s what the band had to say about it:
“‘The Boss’ is the heaviest of the songs on the EP and definitely a live favorite of ours. We wanted to express our frustration with imbalanced power dynamics in our everyday lives with a big supermassive rant of a rock song.”
Eazy Peazy is out November 8 on Fat Possum Records.
Why Bother? - "(I'm Gonna) Pin it on You"
Garage Punk
via Feel It Records
Dingy, noisy garage punk via the Midwest. Mason City, Iowa’s Why Bother? announce their new album alongside some fuzzy, chug-a-lug, grooves courtesy of lead single “(I’m Gonna) Pin it on You.” It’s taken from their upcoming seventh album, and second of 2024, with HEY, AT LEAST YOU'RE NOT ME releasing October 18 via Feel It Records.
Peter's Picks
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - No Title As of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead
Post-Rock
via Constellation Records
The apocalyptic tones of Godspeed You! Black Emperor return for album number eight: No Title As Of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead.
Speaking on the album title, which alludes to the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli airstrikes before February 13th in the ongoing Palestinian genocide, GYBE had this to say: ''No Title = what gestures make sense while tiny bodies fall? what context? what broken melody? and then a tally and a date to mark a point on the line, the negative process, the growing pile."
Drifting decay. Withering limbs. Bodies caught in the cold breeze. Souls lost in the dirt. Empty vessels remain. A light flickers on. Is anybody home?
No Title As Of... is out now via Constellation Records.
Maruja - "Break the Tension"
Post-Punk
via Music For Nations
Maruja follow-up the release of their The Vault project—a recording of six jam sessions recorded between 2021 and 2023—with the official single "Break the Tension.” The track has made appearances at Maruja live performances for well over a year at this stage; you could say that the band has been sitting on gold.
Maruja produce soul-stirring material. Tension sits centre to the bands being. The Gordian Knot deep within your soul is soundtracked by Maruja. They nail the unknowing eye that watches us all.
Maruja's debut album may well just be my most anticipated debut album in years.
Can't make a difference. Can't stop the feeling.
Pebbledash - "Tell Me"
Alt. Rock, Shoegaze
Self-Released
Pebbledash unleash the darker side of themselves through their latest single “Tell Me.” The Cork-based six-piece turn up the dissonance dials as the heavily atmospheric—hauntingly so—world of "Tell Me" takes hold.
Per a press release, “’Tell Me’ explores seeking acceptance as well as finding your own path in life.”
“Tell Me" is taken from the band’s upcoming EP, Four Portraits of the Same Ugly House, set to be released in January 2025.
Pebbledash have live dates across Ireland throughout October and November including Galway, Kinsale, Dublin and Cork. They support fellow Cork act The Cliffords in Dublin on November 5 and headline Whelans in Dublin on November 6.
Pets - "Fixed Taunt" / Motorsports - "Motorsports 2"
Post-Punk, Art Punk
Self-Released
Texas-based bands Pets and Motorsports have joined powers and released a split single. Pets' "Fixed Taunt" meets Motorsports' "Motorsports 2" as the Post-Punk-y, jittery, cold, and calloused worlds of these two up-and-coming Texan acts collide.
Pets "Fixed Taunt" falls in line with bands such as Telstar Drugs and, of course, Women. The Calgary scene of the late 2000's and early 2010's is splintering its distant, cold-shouldered fingers onto all surrounding shores these days. "Fixed Taunt" is a must for fans of tricky, always-evasive guitar goodness.
Motorsports' "Motorsports 2" bolsters a jangly guitar riff akin to what would be referred to as 'Egg Punk' these days. Modest Mouse and Chicago-based band Stuck stick out as influences of some sort. The shout-y vocals add a dash of urgency to the rather choppy-change-y backdrop.
Give me whatever's in that Texas water.
