Atticus' Picks

BabyTron - Tronicles

Detroit Trap, Scam Rap
via The Hip-Hop Lab / EMPIRE

Within the 2020s, BabyTron has experienced one of the fastest and most undeniably fun rises to success and virality as a rapper. Coming up as part of the Detroit-based scam rap trio ShittyBoyz, Tron broke out as the clear #1 option around 2021 and trademarked the brand of punch-in punchline rap utilized by the group as well as other Detroit scammers like Teejayx6 and Kasher Quon in 2019.

Despite gaining tons of cosigns and never actually departing from ShittyBoyz (they just released a full album in September), Tron lost much of his original sound from shifting from beats inspired by 90’s freestyle music to more palatable and modern hip-hop production. However, Tronicles features a few songs that reach back towards that influence, those being “Yew!,” "Hawk Tuah,” and “DPOY,” making them automatically three of the more interesting songs on the project. A lot of the album is still just dark, piano-based beats with syncopated bass, but “3OT” randomly comes through as a rewarding flex track in the middle of the project that doesn’t really fit any standards for hip-hop production (the clap is on every beat…). “Poison Oak” and “Summer ‘24” show Tron’s flexibility as a rapper by making him adapt to classic sample beats.

Tronicles is not as fun as either of BabyTron’s 2020 mixtapes and not even close to the ShittyBoyz 2019 debut 3-Peat, but those days are clearly over and his style has evolved. As a fan of the nonstop bars and addicting beats of vintage ShittyBoyz, this felt like one of Tron’s best solo projects since Luka Troncic in 2021.

Young Nudy - "Right Now"

ATL Trap, Cloud Rap
via RCA Records

The first official single for Young Nudy and Pi’erre Bourne’s collaborative sequel Sli’merre 2 is here. After being hinted at for quite a while, the album was properly announced with the release of “Right Now,” and also set to release on Wednesday, 11/13 at midnight.

The track is everything you would expect from each performer. Nudy settles into his lower voice with a simple flow while Bourne paints bright, video game-esque synth melodies for a slightly repetitive yet classic formula. At this point though, all most people want from Pi’erre Bourne is to recapture some of his magic and clout from the days of the original Sli’merre and The Life of Pi’erre 4; this track (and album) is possibly the closest he has been to that since 2021’s The Life of Pi’erre 5 or maybe his Grails compilation of leaks in April 2023.

This album may be out by the time you’re reading this, but in terms of Pi’erre Bourne’s career, this seems like an important moment. It is already a bit odd that his name is not listed as a co-artist on the Spotify pre-add, but this could also mean that he is not providing vocals on the album.

Dominick's Picks

22º Halo - Lily of the Valley

Slacker Rock, Indie Folk
via Tiny Library Records

22° Halo—the project of Philadelphia-based musician Will Kennedy—share Lily of the Valley. It is a deeply emotional, sentimental, and tender record that focuses on his wife, Kate, and her battle with brain cancer.

Lily of the Valley is out now via Tiny Library Records. In an Instagram post, Kennedy shared a heartfelt statement that’s a better explanation than I could ever give (obviously). Read it below.

Synth Punk, Post-Punk, Art Punk
via Big Scary Monsters

Leeds-based band Thank share their sophomore album, I Have A Physical Body That Can Be Harmed. Regarding the album, vocalist Freddy Vinehill-Cliffe told ASBO Magazine: "I think we’re quite lucky in that we don’t really fit neatly on any bill. We can be the dumbest band at the math rock show or the most technical band at the punk show, the most abrasive band at the indie rock show or the softest band at the metal show, but we kind of make some small twisted amount of sense on each of those bills. It means we get to play a wider range of gigs than a lot of bands, and we also stand out at pretty much all of them."

Garage Rock
via Agitated Records

SPY - "On The Brink"

Hardcore Punk
via Closed Casket Activities

Peter's Picks

Man/Woman/Chainsaw - Eazy Peazy (EP)

Indie Rock, Post-Punk
via Fat Possum Records

Eazy Peazy is the debut EP from Man/Woman/Chainsaw. The London six-piece worked with Gilla Band's Daniel Fox, who produced the project. Of the South London Windmill/Speedy Wunder scene and sound, Man/Woman/Chainsaw converge on a style that is rather artsy and grandiose. Moments such as "Meagan" see the band traverse a hectic swarm of sonic insanity; on the flipside, the band can also do the warm, nostalgic, homely feel quite well such as on "Ode to Clio.” Eazy Peazy hosts a mature sound considering it's a debut project. An air of excitement circles Man/Woman/Chainsaw.

Eazy Peazy is out now via Fat Possum.

You can catch live renditions of Eazy Peazy through the "Live at Goerges Tavern in London" video on Man/Woman/Chainsaw's Youtube channel.

Sludge Metal, Industrial Metal, Drone Metal
via Thrill Jockey

The Body continue their crushing run of form as The Crying Out of Things agonizingly oozes into 2024. It is The Body's eighth solo studio album. The Body's output embodies sonic smothering; indecipherable suffering beneath layers of dirt; agony just out of reach; intangible elements set against the flow of things; and invisible, bludgeoning hurdles.

Noise-oriented music isn't just about noise per se, it's about the application of said noise: "I think for us the key to the way we use noise is, it's not the only element," says Bruford. "You've got to really listen if you're into noise. But it also has to have dynamics."

The Crying Out of Things is out now via Thrill Jockey Records.

BADBADNOTGOOD - "Poeira Cosmica" (ft. Tim Bernardes)

Chamber Pop
via XL Recordings / Innovative Leisure

Off the back of their Mid-Spiral: Chaos, Order, and Growth EPs, BADBADNOTGOOD return for another 2024 release. Featuring Tim Bernandes and Arthur Verocai, BADBADNOTGOOD pout their Brazilian influence with their latest single "Poeira Cosmica" which translates to 'Cosmic Dust.’ Something special was certainly sprinkled on the track. Home to strings akin to what you'd find on BBNG's gorgeous 2021 Talk Memory project—Arthur Verocai does indeed make himself known—"Poeira Cosmica" emanates a laidback, breezy demeanour. Not a care in the world, things lay themselves out in perfect harmony.

"Poeira Cosmica" is out now on XL/Innovative Leisure.

FACS - "Wish Defense"

Post-Punk, Noise Rock
via Trouble In Mind Records

Chicago three-piece FACS release "Wish Defense," the lead single to their upcoming sixth studio album of the same name. Wish Defense happens to be the last project to be engineered by Steve Albini, who passed away while working with the band. It also sees original FACS member Jonathan Van Herik return on bass.

The signature Albini snare sound has been left in the hands of FACS.

'I'm not here, I'm not here, I'm not here....'

Wish Defense is out February 7 via Trouble in Mind.

FACS head to Europe on a 14-date tour in February of 2025. Cities include Brussels, Lyon and Berlin with more show announcements coming soon.

Moreish Idols - "Slouch"

Post-Punk, Art Rock
via Speedy Wunderground / Play It Again Sam

Hailing from Falmouth and operating out of London, Moreish Idols follow up "Pale Blue Dot"—Speedy Wunderground's 50th single—with "Slouch."

On Instagram, the band had this to say about the new track:

“It’s a bleak day for this to land on… but it’s a song that represents facing life’s hurdles with readiness and empowerment so hopefully it can offer a sliver of escapism for you today."

A mysterious, searching bassline queries the basis of life as an utterly existential sonic world is cultivated. "Slouch" would sonically fit on Blur's 13 project; it has that under-the-weather, under-the-world kind of given-up feel. Caught firmly within the grips of 'other' powers; said 'other' powers don't necessarily have your best intentions in mind.

‘And it's gone, and it's gone, and it's gone...’

Moreish Idols will head on a nine-date UK tour in 2025 beginning in Brighton on March 5 with more dates still to be announced.

Bug Blood - Yoshi (EP)

Bedroom Pop, Indie Folk
Self-Released
