BLIGATORY Picks

beabadoobee - This Is How Tomorrow Moves

Singer-Songwriter, Pop Rock, Alt Rock
via Dirty Hit

The phenomenon of beabadoobee continues to develop without signs of slowing down. With her third album, Beatrice Laus teams up with Rick Rubin, culminating in a fusion of sounds she has previously touched on. The opener “Take A Bite” looks back to the early 2000’s, adult alternative radio pop referenced heavily for 2020’s Fake It Flowers. The bridge and final chorus of the track are the “here we go” moment of the album, proceeding into emotional pop rock tunes and soft, dainty tracks similar to her recent hit singles “Glue Song” and “The Way Things Go.” However, neither of these are present on the album.

Before the project closes with a few slower songs, the back-to-back duo of “Post” and “Beaches” bring out the fuzzier, industrial rock sounds of 2022’s Beatopia and provide one last radio-worthy hit. “Beaches” is one of beabedoobee’s best straight-forward rock tracks, with a familiarly catchy hook and classic chord progression. Tomorrow was introduced with memorable singles and contains striking moments upon first listen (see “Girl Song” and the jamming “California”), but the full weight of the project most definitely needs time to be fully felt and unlocked.

This fall, beabadooee embarks on a US tour with alt-country fav Hovvdy and the emerging singer-songwriter Keni Titus.

Machine Girl - "Until I Die"

Digital Hardcore, Hardcore Breaks
via Future Classic

The NYC digital hardcore duo of Matt Stephenson and Sean Kelly bring news of their first studio album in four years with the announcement of MG Ultra alongside its lead single, "Until I Die." While noticeably less abrasive than their usual output, they are as ferocious and energetic as ever. "Until I Die" is centered around a glitchy and danceable frontal assault of drum n' bass alongside some of the strongest melodies Machine Girl has produced.

MG Ultra is Machine Girl's first release with Australian label Future Classic and it is out October 18.

Silverbacks - "Something I Know"

Post-Punk, Indie Rock
via Central Tones / Cargo Records

The Dublin-based band Silverbacks released the track "Selling Shovels" last month, their first new music since 2022's Archive Material. They follow it up this week with "Something I Know," the lead single from their upcoming studio album Easy Being a Winner.

The groove inside of "Something I Know" is of an addictive quality. The kinetic roll and forward motion feel like a never-ending wash of reverberance. And the doo-wop-like bop-bops add a real sweetness to the mix.

Recorded with Daniel Fox of Gilla Band, Easy Being a Winner is set for release on Octboer 18 via Central Tones and Cargo Records.

Atticus' Picks

Double Extra Large - "Pleasure Plaza"

Slacker Rock, Indie Rock
Self-Released

Chicago-based band Double Extra Large release their first single since November 2023, titled “Pleasure Plaza.” The solo project turned four-piece is fronted by Charlie O’Neill, a creative who has aided and released a sizable amount of music throughout the 2020’s, including work on drums for bands Bitcrush and Lonnie. The new XXL single is ultra-crunchy; both the rhythm guitar and lead vocals snap into place, rooting the track in a warm, pleasing tone. This homemade, slacker-rock style is a trademark of O’Neill’s work, dating back to his impressive pandemic-era EP Social Distancing (2020). Throw on the newest Bitcrush album though, and you’ll experience a completely different, jazz-savvy side of his musicianship.

The self-released single is available on streaming now; follow the band’s new Instagram page for info on upcoming releases.

Toro y Moi - "Hollywood" (ft. Ben Gibbard) / "CD-R"

Alt. R&B, Pop Rock, Pop Rap
Dead Oceans

Chaz Bear’s work as Toro y Moi has always found its footing in electronic music, despite the two most recent bodies of work MAHAL (2022) and Sandhills (2023) delving into psychedelic rock and folk styles. “Hollywood” and “CD-R,” the two most recent singles from the upcoming Hole Erth feature poppy melodies and vocals over beats that blend electronic hip-hop drums with synths and guitars. Throw in a guest feature from Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service on the former track, and you have one of the more diverse singles of 2024 so far. “CD-R” basks in memories of early fame Toro, from low-budget tour mishaps to responding to fans on a Blackberry phone. Bear’s nostalgic rap verses prove to be quite engaging.

Hole Erth should be a very intriguing listen; think 2019’s Soul Trash but fully realized. The album drops September 6 on Dead Oceans, with features from Don Toliver, Glaive, Porches, and more.

Dominick's Picks

Citric Dummies - Trapped in a Parking Garage (EP)

Garage Punk, Garage Rock
via Feel It Records

Minneapolis garage punks Citric Dummies share the new four-track EP Trapped in a Parking Garage. Let's just run through the tracklist: "Look Out World (I'm Eatin' Arby's)," [title track], "Driving a Piece of Shit," and "Sit at Home and Die." It's self-admittedly dumb punk, and it's out now via the great Cincinnati-based Feel It Records.

Also worth checking out: the Bandcamp description features some writing from Brendan Wells of Uranium Club that says things like "What we have here is a band who visually tastes like an orange 7Up if such a dumb thing were a thing," and "this band plays: fast! Fuck! Live, it’s fast-as-fuck-oh-fuck-this-is-fast."

Osees - SORCS 80

Synth Punk, Egg Punk
via Castle Face Records

Lo-fi, buzzy punk from the Osees on their 28th full-length album that very prominently and decidedly features NO GUITARS. Primordial synth-punk to stomp around swamps, marshes, and maybe even a bog. Yet another example of how John Dwyer and co. continue to find new ways to reinvent themselves.

In a statement, Dwyer wrote:

"This album was a self imposed ambitious project for us. Something to kick in the creative flow. The last few years, having been a challenging time in general, felt like a good time for a pivot. The last two albums were so guitar and keyboard centric, I wanted a weird and fun set of parameters for us to work with. I demo’d everything at home on cassette 4 track (harkening back to simpler times) using drum loops, and just had at it 'til I had a pile of “songs”.

Tom and I chose one sound each using synths and created a range of 3 octaves of that sample, then loaded them into Roland SPD-SX samplers and learned the transcribed songs using drum sticks. The idea was to change the way we wrote and to have 4 people along the front of the stage essentially playing percussion. So no guitar, no keys."

Bruiser Wolf & F1LTHY - "Rope Chain"

Gangsta Rap
via Fake Shore Drive / Bruiser House

Bruiser Wolf already has two modern classics under his belt with 2021’s Dope Game Stupid and My Story Got Stories, which dropped back in January. This week, the Detroit rapper teams up with Philly native, Working On Dying co-founder, and 'Tread' pioneer F1LTHY on "Rope Chain." A smooth, bass-heavy beat is on the menu as Wolf brings his usual wit and storytelling.

cumgirl8 - "Karma Police"

Synth Punk, Post-Punk
via 4AD

After a string of three really solid EPs, NYC four-piece cumgirl8 announce their debut album, the 8th cumming. It's preceded by the vibrant, bouncy, and scuzzy lead single, "Karma Police," out now. Per a press release, the 8th cumming is "rooted in a philosophy close to the band’s heart: cyberfeminism, which addresses the relationship between human and machine, nature and technology."

the 8th cumming is out October 4 via 4AD. It's the band's second release on the iconic British label 4AD, following the 2023 EP phantasea pharm.

Fake Fruit - "Gotta Meet You"

Post-Punk, Art Punk
via Carpark Records

Oakland post-punk trio Fake Fruit share the latest single from their sophomore album with "Gotta Meet You. It's another volatile sampling of Mucho Mistrust following the previously released "Cause of Death" and "Más o Menos." Off-kilter and a bit splintered, "Gotta Meet You" combines tense and jerky ryhyhms with discordant, anxiety-inducing horns.

Mucho Mistrust is out August 23 via Carpark Records.

Market - "Apple"

Soft Rock, Singer-Songwriter
via Western Vinyl

Led by record engineer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Nate Mendelsohn, Market released their debut in 2022 with The Consistent Brutal Bullshit Gong. This week, the Brooklyn-based group share their first new music in two years with the new track "Apple." It's a tender but tense offering of beautifully anxious pop that explores a family argument. "Apple" is out now via Western Vinyl.

Peel Dream Magazine - "Central Park West" / "Dawn"

Soft Rock, Singer-Songwriter
via Topshelf Records

Ahead of their new album, Peel Dream Magazine share two new singles in "Central Park West" and "Dawn." The two tracks are meditation-like, evoking blissful images of nature through an optimistic lens.

About the songs, bandleader Joe Stevens said the following:

"Central Park West" is a first-person account of me wandering through Manhattan on a solo jaunt. A lot of the song references the Museum of Natural History, which has always fascinated me with its weird dioramas and quiet low lighting. I also walk through Central Park, the Upper West Side, and the Rose Main Reading Room at the New York Public Library on 42nd Street (which the album is named after). The song evokes a kind of woodland sound palette with flutes, banjo, and acoustic guitar, and it feels like a fun juxtaposition with the cosmopolitan stuff. "Central Park West" is backed with another song from the new album, "Dawn", which is kind of Phillip-Glass-inspired and builds in a really pretty way. "Dawn" is this really simple tune about the beginning of a day and all of the opportunity it brings.”

Peel Dream Magazine's fourth album, Rose Main Reading Room, is out September 4 via Topshelf Records.

Peter's Picks

Fontaines D.C. - "Here's The Thing"

Post-Punk Revival, Alt. Rock
via XL Recordings

Fontaines D.C. have led the charge of Irish bands since their debut album, Dogrel, in 2019. Now three albums deep and on the brink of their fourth, their latest single “Here’s the Thing” is the third in a set of sweet and sour pieces. "Here's the Thing" doesn't leave me as excited for Romance as previous singles "Favourite" or "Starburster." It lacks a singular piece (riff, drumbeat, etc.) of magic that lifts the track to the upper echelon. But within the context of the album, I'm sure it'll be worth its weight in gold; the music video adds a bit of context for those seeking a deeper connection.

Romance is still one the most highly anticipated record of the year and is set to drop August 24 via XL Recordings.

Kelly Lee Owens - "Sunshine"

Progressive House
via dh2

"Sunshine" is the second single released in the run-up to Kelly Lee Owens fourth studio album Dreamstate. As the track title would suggest, it is an upbeat and rather blissful dose of rising electronics. As the album title would suggest, I think we're in for some lucid, vibrant goodness.

Dreamstate is out October 18 via dh2. A collaborative-heavy effort, the album includes producer-writer credits from Bicep, Tom Rowlands from The Chemical Brothers and George Daniel.

KLO will head on a EU/UK tour, beginning in Berlin on October 29.

Louse - "Joy In Pain"

Post-Punk
via Feel It Records

Cincinnati strikes again as "Joy in Pain," the second single from Louse's forthcoming debut album, steps out into the light.

Watery soundscapes of a Gothic nature whip up nacreous rainfalls. The worlds of Louse are home to rainbows of a darker shade. Jaded and burnt out on day-to-day existence, desparation is never too far.

The band will follow-up their 2022 Dressed In Skin EP with their debut record Passions Like Tar, which will be let loose on September 20 via Feel It Records.

Thank - "Writing Out A List Of All The Names Of God"

Noise Rock

via Big Scary Monsters

Excuuuuuse me. Thank's debut single under the Big Scary Monsters label goes by the short and sweet name of "Writing Out a List of All the Names of God".

A drumroll akin to slapped dustbins opens up the track before a biting humour and deranged sense of rhythm join the party. Scrawling guitars and laser-like synths are then brought into existence.

The track is 'loosely based' on frontman Freddy Vinehill-Cliffe's grandpa's study: "he had handwritten a list of different names for God, I guess because he had become so forgetful and this was something he specifically didn't want to forget.'"

Thank have a handful of live dates in October and November, including a date at Yes, Manchester alongside Austin, Texas' Cherubs on November 4.
