It was with a very heavy heart that Saba created and released his sophomore album; CARE FOR ME is a glum and pensive masterpiece that may stand alone in the Chicago emcee’s catalog for eternity. Since the release of 2016’s Bucket List Project, Saba’s eloquent passages and penchant for storytelling had him steadily on the rise. What was to come: a spiraling, deep diving exposé on the rapper/producer’s most formative experiences, likely few saw coming. And, so what? A lot of artists wear their stories on their sleeves. What drives CARE FOR ME to great heights are the compelling interpersonal commentaries that translate to Saba’s intrapersonal conflicts and dilemmas. A true sense of death and danger is present in the songwriting, heightened by the vocal work and production quality. With Saba’s hands over every lyric and sound, CARE FOR ME has clear thematic outlines, consistent in every layer of nearly every song. Five years later, it remains one hell of a mood piece by one of Chicago’s finest. – DeVán (8.5/10)
